I'm Back

I'm back in KL after 10 days in England. I didn't do any running! Will get a long run and ride in this weekend though I hope. Here's a few things that struck me during my holiday...

  • Orange street lights
  • Fit, healthy-looking dogs of all shapes and sizes
  • Exceedingly polite shop assistants
  • Being asked if I want a bag instead of automatically being giver one
  • Natural air-con all around
  • Lots and lots of cyclists in London, riding all sort of bikes
  • The opposition political party all over TV and the papers
  • The PM being given a hard time by reporters on TV
  • Non-cartoon kids TV
  • A guy with jeans worn so low he had to walk like a penguin to stop them falling down
  • Digital TV, with loads of really crap channels!
  • RM5 for a newspaper, RM70 for a couple of sandwiches etc... for 2 in London, RM210 for a taxi from Central to South London, RM150 for a 2hr bus journey, RM3 minimum charge for a public payphone call, RM80 for a 30min train journey
  • Big fat mozzies in my Mums house - in England- in October - wow!
  • Drivers who are considerate towards pedestrians and other drivers
  • Buses driving slowly in slow lanes
  • Lots of Range Rovers
  • People wearing long-sleeves and warm clothes
  • The wide and wonderful variety of people in London - a thousand different sizes, colours, hairstyles, fashions, languages, and probably 3 or 4 different genders!
  • 568ml beer cans!
  • Super-cheap clothes in Tesco!

    Out Of The Wilderness

Inspired by the decline of my recent illness, the latest 220 Triathlon mag (thanks Mum) and the 2 months free membership voucher for Celebrity Fitness that's been sitting in my car for almost a month, I finally went to the gym yesterday to register, with the intention of getting some 30min runs or bike rides in at lunchtimes, or in the mornings once Lucas' school holidays start in a week or so.

In the evening, I came back from the training wilderness last night when I managed a 43min turbo sesh while watching the Stage 3 Tour highlights. Before that I had been crossing over to the "dark side" - beginning to enjoy the almost unheard of 9-day period of inactivity!

The PCC newsletter announces that there'll be just a short ride on Sunday so looks like I'll be heading to Seremban for another 21km fun run.

In my fantasy Tour, I'm currently 1965th out of 3742, which I reckon is pretty good as most of the high scorers at the moment don't have teams that will maintain those scores through the mountains. I have a number of currently low-scoring GC contenders in my team and when things get shaken up by the Alps this weekend I hope to start my rise into the prize-winning zone!

According to the TNT online tracking, my wheels have been in a warehouse for 24hrs - hopefully I'll get them by tomorrow and will sleep with them by my bed for weeks to come!!

I'm beginning to plan ahead for my trip to England in Sept/Oct. I've got my eye on 2 footy matches, and my mate Paul's Dad is looking at getting Chelsea tickets...

    Tottenham v Aston Villa - Mon 1/10/07
Arsenal v Sunderland - Sun 7/10/07 (will need to avoid post-wedding hangover for this one!)

    England Holiday June-July 2006

Here's a few nice snaps from our holiday.... the
first one is Lucas on the plane on the way over.

The next one is Lucas and Sam in Bedford. Lucas is jumping up and down on some pads that made different pitched sounds.

More to follow...got to work now!

The Lazy Period - June to July 2006

Having proven to myself that I am a supremely fit super-athlete, by finishing the MMDS1 Duathlon in April, and the New Balance Pacesetters 15k run in May (in 1:51:27, well inside my target of 2:00:00 - not bad considering I have never run that far before), I took a bit of a break from running/cycling/hashing 2-3 times a week. My body didn't like this sudden inactivity and repaid me with a dose of the flu in mid-June. A few fags at Paul's wedding in England on 30th June followed by a Hamlet cigar whilst watching Italy beat Germany in the World Cup semi didn't help much either.

As finishing a Sprint Duathlon was not such a big deal anymore, my desire to re-commence training didn't surface until mid/late July. I planned to start training by going to the KL Harriettes Hash in TTDI Park in KL on the evening of the 19th. I then planned to cycle 20k or so to work on the Saturday morning and do the Klang 10k run on the Sunday morning. My plans were crippled by a viral infection and a 40 degree fever that appeared suddenly on the 19th. This basically wiped me out and I couldn't face any kind of activity until the 25th when I managed to do about 18k on my bike in the evening. Later in the week my flu re-appeared in the form of an infected left sinus, which brought along a thumping headache with it. I was seriously doubting that I could do the Duathlon, which I had really be looking forward to for months, particularly as this one had a longer (25k) bike ride - which suits me better.

I thought that a comination of early-nights and prayers would do the trick. By Saturday night (Duathlon-eve) I needed a small overnight miracle. Miraculously, I felt good when I woke at 0515hrs on the Sunday morning despite Lucas lying next to me and sniffing all night (he had caught my cold), so off I went to Putrajaya, with the sole aim of finishing, in whatever time it takes.
