Just been reading about the Max Moseley court case. It would appear that the a***holes at the News Of The World are yet again confusing "mildly interesting" with "in the public interest". The only way they will learn that they are not the same is when the punishment for breaching an individuals privacy is big enough to hurt their profits.
I hope he gets his punitive damages - and gives them to charity.
My blog posts are taking a number of days to appear here - I wonder if they are being "reviewed" by someone first?!?

Fascinating
Some fascinating stories in the newspapers these days -
The Malaysian Roman Catholic church goes to court to overturn a ban on them using the word "Allah". As far as I know the word "Allah" is an Arab word meaning God, that pre-dates Islam. It is therefore not exclusive to Islam. I am sure that the word God is used in english writings on Islam - shouldn't that be banned? Or alternatively - why doesn't everyone chill-out and think of more important things to argue about. We are talking about the same God after-all!
The Government declines to renew the permit of a Tamil-language newspaper - seen to be sympathetic towards HINDRAF - but then reverses its decision.
A charity run by the wives of the ex-Selangor MB transfers all its funds to prevent the new "opposition" state government getting their hands on it.
Anwar Ibrahim (as the spouse of the opposition leader) is not invited to the opening of Parliament.
Two Israeli members of Chelsea FC will be allowed into Malaysia to play football. A spokesman for the Home Office (?) said "they don't want to get involved in politics" and "they are a good team - everybody wants to see them play". If you are going to ban citizens from a certain country from entering your country then at least treat all of them equally. So Avram Grant & Ben Haim can enter because its a football match i.e. non-political. Do you think that your average Israeli potential tourist has a political agenda? I think not. Also - not everybody likes Chelsea.

The Perfect Taxi Ride
Does such a thing exist? This post is inspired by Dubai taxi drivers - who treat the accelerator and brake pedals as switches that are either "on" or "off" - with nothing in between!
Let's consider -
1) Cost. 0-4 points
2) Does the driver use the meter without question? 0-2 points
3) Does the driver agree to take you where you want to go? 0-2 points
4) Is the driver familiar with the local area? 0-2 points
5) Does the driver drive in a safe and comfortable manner? 0-4 points
Max score = 14. Here's my scoring...
LONDON - 0+2+2+2+4 = 10
KL - 4+1+1+1+1 = 8
DUBAI 2+1+2+1+0 = 6

I did a Double-Hill run again last night, and despite not really going for it, I managed to knock about 50s of my personal best to set a new record of 58:17. Starting from my usual spot in Bukit Tunku, my splits were approx 22:30 at Bukit Aman lights, 27:30 at the right turn before Bang Negara KTMB station, and just under 50:00 at the final left turn before the final killer hill.

I wish to offer a huge amount of GOOD LUCK to everyone I know (too many to list) who's taking part in Ironman Langkawi this Saturday - I'll be following your progress all day online, from the comfort of my desk. And on Sunday a.m. when you're all in bed, or up but unable to walk properly, I'll probably be off to the Lake Gardens for the 2nd KLIM circuit training run - although I don't quite fancy the idea of running 2.3km laps for over 2 hours!

Someone who I wish was in Langkawi - so I could ask one of you to punch him - is Mohamed Al-Fayed. Al-Fayed, who was born in Egypt and who has been refused British citizenship due to his dubious character, has the bloody cheek to question the nationality/citizenship of Prince Philip (The Queen's husband) and say that he should be sent back to where he comes from. Well I tell you what Mr bloody Al-Fayed - just because you own a shop they frequent doesn't mean you can insult the British Monarchy - why don't YOU f*** off (sorry Mum) and go back to where YOU came from!! That's the last time I ever go to Fulham FC (which he owns).

Dear All,
If you are looking for a really easy job - and are not at all bothered about how much you earn - I suggest that you become a taxi driver, spend all day at Setiawangsa LRT station, and never actually agree to take anybody anywhere!
May I suggest that the throng of taxi drivers at this location display a list of destinations that they are willing to drive to, and under what conditions. I suspect that the list of destinations could be written on a post-it note, with the list of conditions spanning several volumes a la Encyclopedia Britannica.

Human Reproduction Banned in UK

In a widely anticipated move, the UK Government has banned all forms of human reproduction with immediate effect, citing the fact that recent risk assessments carried out by lawmakers had determined that the everyday health and safety risks faced by newborns had become unacceptably high.
This announcement came shortly after the cancellation of a pancake race in North Yorkshire due to health and safety concerns.

Train of Thought
Why do the media give Tom Cruise a hard time? Who cares if he has unusual religious views - does that actually affect anyone else in a tangible way? So what if he jumped up and down on US TV expressing usually reserved emotions - is that a crime? He's a movie actor for goodness sake and does a great job if you ask me - leave him alone.
The constant news in the inquest into Diana's death leaves a bad taste in my mouth. The papers aren't interested in the real issues. It wouldn't surprise me if the whole circus is a fire fanned by the media so they can report gory or gossipy details about her life and death on a daily basis for another several months - such as who her lovers were, what they said, who called her a "whore", how she said Queenie would abdicate, what she looked like after the accident etc...blah blah blah...
HOLD THE FRONT PAGE!!! Mega Breaking News - as reported by The Star a few days ago, International Trade & Industry Minister Rafida Aziz has finally obtained a Jaya Jusco loyalty card after 20 years of shopping there. She said she didn't have one because nobody had ever offered her one. Mmmmmm - I would expect such distinguished persons to display a bit of initiative in such critical matters!
Why do I never see empty roti man bikes? They are always jam-packed full of bread hanging everywhere. Do they ever sell any bread?

Why Oh Why Oh Why...
...do people buy squeaking shoes for toddlers?
Shoes like that surely must be way up there in the list of incredibly pointless and annoying things in life!!
Is it some kind of tracking device?
And...
I love the way that some people put small emblems on their car number plates (with a bit of gold of course) as if to say "I've got wads of money and influential friends so think twice before you flag me down Mr Polis". Of course the cars should be black (it's a very official colour - don't you think so?)
On close inspection, some of these emblems say something wonderfully impressive such as Ahli Majlis (MP) or the Bar Council, but some just mention the State of origin.
I feel like making a line of pure gold emblems that look particularly intricate and impressive, but on closer observation have an embossed picture of a black-and-white mouse and the title "Kelab Mickey Mouse" or something like that!

Shut Up & Follow The Rules!!!!!!!!!
There's yet another School Uniform v Religion story on the BBC, and I feel compelled to vent my feelings before I sleep.
Basically, a 14-year old Sikh girl in England insists she has the right to wear a bangle to school (as part of her religion) even though the school rules say you can't wear them.
I reckon she should follow the bloody school rules!!!!!!! What sort of society do you think we'd have if everyone was allowed to do whatever the hell they wanted to if they knew they just had to say that it was part of their religion??? You'd suddenly have a million-and-one new religions popping-up everywhere.
"Excuse me sir, I'm a New-Age Geordie and I say that I must wear a Newcastle United shirt to school. Also, my religion forbids me from paying taxes and I must sacrifice a human baby every Friday night - is that OK? If not I'm sure there's a thousand Human Rights Lawyers salivating at the prospect of a lengthy legal process to help me assert my rights"
When are people going to stop thinking that they have the right to do whatever they want to just because they say that it is required by Religion A, B, or C????????? England is not a Sikh country, a Muslim country or a Christian country. There are some rules that everyone has to follow, some rules that over-ride your religious rules.
School rules say wear a green jumper and no jewellry - DO WHAT YOU ARE TOLD GIRL!!!!!!!!
If you want to follow Religion A strictly, go and live in a Religion A country. Repeat for B, C D etc...
If you want to live in multi-cultural multi-religious tolerant England, with equality, human rights etc....you need to accept that not all religions can be catered for 100%.

So Far So Good
This week is working out much better.
I did an "acceleration run" around KLCC's 1.3km loop last night and then ran home for a total of 11km. According to my Plan, I have to do between 3.5 & 4.5 hours of running each week. Most of that will be straightforward endurance runs, with the rest being speed or technique work. Last night was my first run of the latter type, designed to simulate the increasing difficulty of a race, and to practice pacing.
I did a warm-up lap then 3 acceleration laps. Lap times were 8:23-8:11-7:50-7:18 for a total of 31:42, about 3 minutes slower than my 4 lap PB. Not surprising given my super-slow pace on the first 2 laps.
In a few weeks I'll start doing hill work for strength.
Having run home, I couldn't take the boys to school, so asked a friend to do it. This allows me to have a short swim in the a.m. before heading to work. Today I only managed 20mins, the beginning of which was in darkness, with fogged-up goggles! Mmmmmmm....I think I'll have to do condo pool swims in the evenings instead.
My LRT journey to work was a true nightmare. I queued up behind about 7 people and was still only 3rd in line after 6 trains had passed. So I gave up and crossed the platform to head out of town and board at the 1st station. This worked, but took a long time. It took me 1h30m to travel to work by LRT. 15km. I can run it in that time, cycle in 30mins, drive in 40mins.........
The rush hour "Rapid" KL service on the Putra Line is a disgrace. The stations are designed for 4-5 cars per train, but they only have 2. The STAR line trains have 4 cars.
50km+ PCC ride tonight. Might use the Planet X if the roads are dry.
What with a Deepavali long ride planned on Thursday, 15km run on Friday and Powerman on Sunday, I should catch up on my training hours massively this week!
Can't wait 'till Sunday, almost EVERYONE is going to be there.

Taking The Piss
So......now even making a light-hearted comment about a common characteristic of a particular race is "racist".
Halle Berry (see previous post) has caused a big fuss by her "anti-Semitic" remark during an interview that a digitally altered photo of her with a big nose makes her look like "her Jewish cousin".
The irony is that her comment was inspired by a Jewish colleague of hers that made an almost identical comment backstage before Halle went on air!
If I was Jewish I'd like to think I'd be embarrassed by the fuss being caused. God help us all of taking the piss out of someone is suddenly racist and there's an international outcry.

The Malaysian Polis get a bit of a hard time from the public and the press most of the time but I must confess that my experience of lodging a police report at the Balai Polis Trafik in KL the other day was not bad at all. Apart from not knowing what to do to start with, once I'd found out it was pretty plain-sailing, and the 4 officers I dealt with were perfectly pleasant.
So...kudos to PDRM!

A Bride Sues Her Florist Over Pastel Hydrangeas
Firstly - apologies to all sensible Americans, this doesn't refer to you.
Apart from George W Bush, another National embarrassment must be the never-ending stream of outrageosuly stupid and frivilous lawsuits in the US that are reported around the World. People around the Globe must really wonder what goes on in the mind of your average US citizen when they hear about lawsuits such as the one below. Shall I follow "suit" - sue my secretary for wasted time and neurological trauma caused by spelling mistakes - sue the parents of the baby I looked after the other day because he farted and caused me significant olfactory distress? Can Americans not solve problems amicably? Who in their right mind spends $27k on flowers when there are kids starving in the World? It is f'ing obscene. Don't forget the lawyer who sued his dry-cleaners for $$$millions (he lost).......read on........

In the most “egregious,” Ms. Glatt says in a lawsuit alleging breach of contract, the florist substituted pastel pink and green hydrangeas for the dark rust and green hydrangeas she had specified for 22 centerpieces.

Not only was the color wrong, Ms. Glatt said in the lawsuit, filed on Friday in State Supreme Court in Manhattan, but the hydrangeas were wilted and brown, and arranged in dusty vases without enough water.
Their pastel colors clashed with the linens, favor boxes, wedding cake and décor at Cipriani 42nd Street, the luxurious restaurant where she and her husband, David, held their reception, Ms. Glatt said.
“The use of predominantly pastel centerpieces had a significant impact on the look of the room and was entirely inconsistent with the vision the plaintiffs had bargained for,” Ms. Glatt, a lawyer who practices under the name Elana Elbogen, said in the lawsuit, which she filed on behalf of herself, her husband and her mother-in-law, Tobi Glatt, who paid for the flowers.
Elana Glatt said they had reluctantly paid for the flowers in advance, with a cashier’s check for $27,435.14. She accused the florist of a “bait and switch” scheme, and asked for more than $400,000 in restitution and damages for, among other things, “unjust enrichment” by the florist. In a litany of “distressing and embarrassing” offenses, the lawsuit says the florist substituted cheaper orchids than promised in the bridal bouquet and provided the equivalent of $5 roses from a street vendor, but charged $55 to $65 for those arrangements.
Elana Glatt yesterday said, “It was a lovely wedding,” except for the flowers.

The Wonderful World Of...
...SE Asian Politics and Media.
Since spending most of my life in SE Asia since 1997 I have taken a keen interest in politics and current affairs and the way it is reported.
I find it much more interesting than UK politics.
In the UK, it is a fairly open affair. There's a wide-ranging and relatively free media. Some criticize the Govt heavily, some don't, some sensationalise everything and publish scandalous news complete with sordid details. The views of Opposition parties are widely-reported, Commons proceedings are live on TV everyday etc... but I find it quite boring.
Here is a different story. However I have recently become a bit bored with reading the same old stories in the newspapers. The Star in particular seems to follow a very familiar format day-in day-out...
It is very refreshing to read articles from a different point-of-view.

Melilea
Dear All, I wish to highlight to the World the important news that Melilea International "upholds the philosophy of EXPANDING OUR TRANSFORMATION."
Indeed they do. Absolutely fantastic news! When I want to buy some health supplement, the first thing I want to know is what bullshit (sorry Mum) philosophy the manufacturer has. Thanks Melilea.
Talking of Melilea, I have always been a bit puzzled as I pass under their huge billboard south of KL. It shows a bevvy of very happy looking people (with very narrow, straight and well-defined eyebrows - and perfect skin) holding lovely round juicy red apples.
An advert for fruit, or a healthy lifestyle you might think??
Nope - it's an advert for Melilea's "Greenfield Organic" products. Aha! Greenfield Organic - that must mean a range of fresh-from-the-farm vegetables or fruit!!
Nope - it is for a plastic tub of powder that is "processed by using the latest and most sophisticated technologies".
Processed? Organic? same thing?
